Questions about Google Ads?
What Google Ad strategy works best for outdoor brands?
No one strategy works best for every brand.
1) Identify your business objectives & measurement
What are you trying to achieve through Google Ads? New customer acquisition? Loyalty and retention? Gain market share? More importantly, how are you going to measure success?
2) Align your campaign strategy with your business objectives
If you’re looking to acquire new customers, focus on broad search or Pmax with brand exclusions. Each campaign targets a customer in a different stage of the sales cycle so make sure your campaigns are aligned with your larger strategy. (And going purely off ROAS is not a great strategy).
3) Monitor & Optimize
Once campaigns are running with a measurement strategy, you can tell which ads are achieving their goals and which ones are not. Test, optimize, and focus on continued improvement.
How do do you track ROI for Google Ads?
Google Ads has a robust conversion tracking system. You can measure different customer actions, assign a value, and start tracking conversion value.
The most straightforward conversion action is a purchase on a DTC site with the value being the total amount of the purchase. We can also tie value to form fills (inquiry forms), store visits and phone calls, and even off-line conversions through integrations with Salesforce or Hubspot.
What is the best budget allocation for direct to consumer outdoor brands?
As a starting point, we recommend using 10% of DTC revenue to come up with an initial ad budget.
We then look at our campaigns and where they align within the sales funnel. Start at the bottom of the sales funnel and work your way up in terms of funding campaigns. This will ensure that you are not spreading yourself to thin with top of funnel ads and have a budget structure focused on conversions.
How do you retarget customers who browse outdoor gear?
There are several retargeting strategies and using a mix of them will be most effective.
1) Google Tags - Retarget website visitors using cookie based retargeting if your website is setup with Google Tags.
2) Google Engagement - Retargeting people who have engaged with other google properties like watching a youtube video
3) Using 1st party data from Klaviyo - Klaviyo allows you to target customers from specific email or customer segments. This is helpful for cross selling or loyalty campaigns.
4) Google Audiences - although not technically retargeting, google has many pre-build audiences of people who show intent to purchase certain categories of items. You can also make your own custom audiences using your own search terms.
How can Google Ads integrate with email marketing for growth?
This is one of the reasons we love Klaviyo, they make it so easy to integrate Google Ads and email marketing.
Klaviyo can send customer data to Google Ads. This data can be used for remarketing, to build audiences, and also build lapsed,VIP, and past purchaser segments in Google Ads which is now requested to improve AI performance. We also use segmented past purchasers when building audiences in Performance Max campaigns very effectively.
Additionally, Google has a Lead Form extension which can be used to send leads from Google Ads back to your email platform. Although, we have not had great success with the quality of these leads.
